The Leftovers is to be made into a full TV series by HBO, it has been revealed.

The Damon Lindelof-penned adaptation has been granted a 10-episode run and is set to star Justin Theroux, Liv Tyler and Christopher Eccleston, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The TV show will focus on the Rapture, and will tell the story of those who have been left behind in a suburban community. Lindelof, who will also executive produce the series, will be the showrunner for the programme.

Theroux will star as a police chief attempting to retain normality in the new, disturbing world. Meanwhile Tyler will play Meg, a young woman who becomes a target for members of an enigmatic cult.

The supporting cast includes Eccleston, Chris Zylka and Paterson Joseph.

Filming and broadcast dates for the series have yet to be revealed.
