Liv Tyler is to star in HBO drama pilot The Leftovers.

The 35-year-old actress will make her TV debut in Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof's project, according to Deadline.

Tyler will appear alongside Justin Theroux (American Psycho) and Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) in the adaptation of Tom Perrotta's 2011 novel, a dystopian drama set on a post-apocalyptic Earth.

The Lord of the Rings star has been cast as Meg, a young woman eager to escape her impending marriage who is targeted by members of a mysterious cult.

Tyler's recent credits include the movies Super (2010), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and The Strangers (2008).

Michael Gaston (The Mentalist, Damages) will also feature in The Leftovers.
