Orphan Black spin-off confirms release window and storyline

It has been five years since Orphan Black's critically-acclaimed fifth season, but a spin-off is now on the way.

AMC, the network that produces The Walking Dead, has just greenlit Orphan Black: Echoes for AMC+.

The show will premiere in 2023, and will be set a few years after the original series ended. It is set to explore the "scientific manipulation of human existence" through the entangled lives of a group of women who find themselves suddenly thrust into each others' existence.

According to AMC, the women will "embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal".

Echoes was created by Anna Fishko, who will also be acting as showrunner.

There is currently no confirmation that its original star, Tatiana Maslany, will be reprising her role or be making any appearances. But Orphan Black director John Fawcett will be returning for the spin-off as a director and executive producer.

"Embarking on a new saga of Orphan Black with Anna, our partners at Boat Rocker, and AMC could not be more exciting," Fawcett said in recent a statement.

"For all our dedicated OB fans out there, I am thrilled that we can bring this new chapter to them. Without our fans, this new show certainly wouldn't exist and for that I am deeply grateful.

Echoes is not breaking news for the fandom, who call themselves the Clone Club. Whispers of a possible spin-off started spreading as early as back in 2019, with various writers pitching in ideas for a possible storyline.

Fortunately, there is also additional Orphan Black content out there for audiences to enjoy as they wait for the spin-off's release date.

A podcast titled Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, was launched by Realm in April 2021, taking place eight years after Project LEDA was destroyed. Its newest season was released back in October.

Orphan Black: Echoes will premiere in 2023.
