The creator of the Lethal Weapon TV series has addressed questions about Damon Wayans' future on the show, saying that he is "very hopeful" the actor will return for the fourth season.

Last October, Wayans – who plays Roger Murtaugh – had announced his intention to quit after the third season, citing family and health concerns relating to diabetes. However, after discussions with producers regarding his schedule and special diabetic meals, the co-lead agreed to sign up for two additional episodes.

The show has now wrapped up filming for this season, and creator Matt Miller told Deadline that the mood on set has been wonderful.

"We all sat down and we changed Damon's hours around, and it was absolutely a delight from that moment on," he said. "He was a joy, and he loved being on the set.

"He gave a big send-off speech for the crew and thanked everybody. He bought everyone extremely expensive end-of-season jackets. He was really nice and lovely, and it ended up being a wonderful moment. He is in Hawaii right now, catching his breath.

"We are all in a very good headspace. I think it's going to be a conversation, a negotiation, but I'm very hopeful that he will return."

The show's future is uncertain right now, as Fox has yet to announce whether or not it will be renewed.

But Fox executive Charlie Collier told TVLine that he thinks Lethal Weapon has "really hit its stride well" recently.

The third season has seen Seann William Scott take over from Clayne Crawford as Wayans' fellow co-lead, and star Keesha Sharp (Trish Murtaugh) has praised the actor, previously telling Digital Spy that "he's the sweetest soul you will ever meet".

She also said that Lethal Weapon was cancelled at one point following Crawford's departure at the end of season 2, before it was picked up for a third season.

Lethal Weapon airs on FOX in the US and on ITV in the UK.
