The One Show presenter Lauren Laverne apologised for a guest’s “fruity language” during the latest live show.

Laverne and co-host Alex Jones welcomed Claudia Winkleman, singer Mika, Ben Miller and Sally Phillips onto the couch on Tuesday, with the latter pair previewing their new television series, Austin.

As Miller and Phillips spoke about their experience of working alongside co-star Michael Theo, Phillips made a blunder as she recalled: “We did have a word with each other early on, we were like “Oh shit. Shit he’s really good. We’re going to have to raise our game.”

As the pair continued, Laverne picked up on the gaffe, with the presenter apologising to the audience and home viewers as she said: “We should just apologise, guys, for any fruity language. Sorry about that.”

Laverne later clarified to a confused Jones what had occurred, with Miller and Phillips bursting into laughter following the blunder. Winkleman then took the blame for the incident, quipping: “I think it might have been me – yes, I’ll take it” before wryly nodding to Phillips.

The blunder came as Miller and Phillips promoted their Australian comedy-drama, which follows children’s author Julian Hartswood (Miller) as he seemingly ruins the life of both himself and his wife, Ingrid (Phillips).

With his career in tatters, Julian is shocked after Austin (Theo), his son whom he never knew existed, turns up out of the blue. Wanting to rebuild his life, Julian hires a documentary film crew to depict his life with his neurodivergent son, hoping for a ticket out of “cancellation jail.”

Following its premiere in Australia in June, UK viewers have waited for a long time for Austin to air, but they will soon be able to binge all eight episodes after the series is released on BBC iPlayer on Friday (April 4).

Furthermore, the series – which was co-created by former Death in Paradise star Miller – has already been greenlit for a second season, so you can expect more of Austin in the future.

The One Show airs on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
