Zayn Malik has delighted One Direction fans with an unexpected announcement.

The 'Dusk Till Dawn' singer was part of the boyband from their X Factor inception in 2010, until he left in 2015.

He has since had a successful career away from his 1D bandmates - including Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and the late Liam Payne - releasing singles such as 'Pillowtalk' and his collaborative song with Taylor Swift, 'I Don't Wanna Live Forever'.

Taking to the stage in Washington DC on his ongoing Stairway to the Sky tour, Zayn shared some surprise news that will impact his live shows in the future.

"Maybe I’ll mix it up at some point, maybe a 1D song in there or something," he said, to raucous applause.

"Don’t get excited, not tonight! Sorry, I didn’t mean to tease you like [that]. It’s not tonight."

The news follows the death of Payne, aged 31, on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

His former bandmates paid tribute to the singer in the days following his death, with Zayn sharing a touching gesture at his show in Leeds last year.

Taking to the stage, Zayn displayed a banner with the message, "Love you bro", alongside Liam's name and the years he was born and died.

In an emotional message posted to his social media pages, Zayn was among the stars sharing their memories of Liam.

"I loved and respected you dearly. I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever. There [are] no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated," he wrote at the time.

"I hope that wherever you are right now, you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are."
