The Emmy nominations always generate a huge amount of debate. Mad Men or Breaking Bad? Game of Thrones or Downton Abbey? But it isn't always the shows and stars that make the cut that get people talking.

With a limited number of nominations and an ever-expanding list of brilliant TV shows, whittling them down to a shortlist means that many great performances and series go unrewarded.

It would be an impossible task to please everyone's tastes, but that isn't going to stop us taking the opportunity to have a good moan about it. Here are Digital Spy's picks for the five worst Emmy snubs of 2013.

What does this show have to do to get an Emmy nod? Andrew Lincoln. Incredible. Norman Reedus. Awesome. Season three. Edge-of-your-seat action from start to finish. There's something about this zombie thriller that doesn't click with the Emmy judges, but we can't put our finger on it. *Sigh*. Maybe next year.

The first season of New Girl actually picked up some Emmy nods, despite being decidedly patchy. Season two has seen the show find its feet and strut its stuff. And it hasn't got diddly squat. What gives, Emmys?

The fact Jake Johnson hasn't been given a nod for his performance as loveable slob Nick Miller is an outrageous injustice.

The Fannibals will not be happy. This tasty dark NBC/Sky Living series has earned a loyal and incredibly passionate fanbase thanks to Bryan Fuller's colourful and imaginative take on the Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter story.

Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen can both count themselves as unlucky to have not got nominations, but the 'Best Actor' category is particularly fierce this year. Even Emmy regular Michael C. Hall couldn't get a look-in this year.

Game of Thrones

It seems a little bit silly moaning about Game of Thrones not getting enough nominations when it picked up a hefty 17 nods, but then maybe that's always going to be the case when a show has such a huge and high quality cast.

We're obviously chuffed that Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke got 'Supporting' nominations, but was there really no room for Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Charles Dance or the best of the lot, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau? Maybe next year Nikolaj, maybe next year.

Orphan Black

BBC America

The biggest outpouring of post-Emmy nominations fury on Twitter was directed at the complete lack of nominations for BBC America's sci-fi series Orphan Black and in particular its star Tatiana Maslany.

The show has developed a sizeable cult following and many TV critics and fans were appalled that the Canadian series didn't get a mention. Many have suggested that it would have picked up a handful if it had been on HBO.

Who else just missed the cut?
Justified, Sons of Anarchy and The Americans - FX shows still barely get a look-in beyond American Horror Story. Nothing for the final season of The Office? No Parks and Rec in the comedy battle? No Will Arnett. And what about poor old Eric Stonestreet?
