The highly anticipated trailer for Heartstopper Forever has just landed teasing an emotionally charged ending for the hit Netflix series, set to arrive on Friday 17 July.

"True love stories never really end," declares Heartstopper Forever's trailer, as the two minute teaser hints at new experiences for the Truham gang and heavy emotions, whilst still being packed full of the heart-achingly sweet tenderness of first loves that the franchise is known for.

The teaser hints at the 'bittersweet ending' James' actor Bradley Riches promised during his exclusive interview with Digital Spy.

While promoting his new book Autistically Me at his book launch, Riches took a moment to speak on the Heartstopper finale. When asked if fans would be happy with the way the story wraps, Riches shared: "It is Heartstopper. It is always going to be positive. It's going to be good fun.

"I think the only thing that people might be sad about is it is the last one. It is bittersweet but it is a beautiful show to be a part of."

What to Read Next

Riches admitted to feeling sad about having to say goodbye to his character, but shared his way of keeping the spirit of James alive through his Emmerdale character Lewis.

"I kind of live through James with Emmerdale a little bit," he told Digital Spy. "Obviously the characters are kind of similar... so James is still alive in a different version with Lewis in Emmerdale which is cool."

The emotional trailer, coupled with Riches's words, only backs up the synopsis which tees up a sweet and tender finale and hints at problems for the titular romantic couple Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke).

"Nick and Charlie are inseparable," reads the synopsis, "but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet."

It continues: "Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?"

Creator Alice Oseman told Tudum: "The most pressing issue for Nick and Charlie, as we know from the end of season three, is that Nick will soon be leaving for university, effectively making Nick and Charlie a long-distance couple.

"For a teenage relationship, this is a pretty huge hurdle to overcome. Each of them has some conflicting feelings about this development. Nick isn't sure who he is without Charlie, and Charlie is nervous about being left behind. They have some work to do — both on their relationship and individually."

She added: "The movie will be an exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives."
