ITV has released the first trailer for the upcoming thriller The Party, starring Luke Evans in the lead role. Based on Elizabeth Day's 2017 novel of the same name, the series could be a big hit when it releases.

Evans portrays Martin Gilmour, a working-class journalist who has a bond with rich politician Ben Fitzmaurice (Tom Cullen). While their relationship goes back several decades, new developments threaten it.

Joining Evans and Cullen in the cast for the highly-anticipated series are Joanna Scanlan, Lindsay Duncan, Douglas Hodge, Lydia Leonard and Sarah Solemani, the latter of whom adapts Day's novel.

Ahead of its release, we now have a brand-new teaser trailer, which can be viewed below. In the 20-second clip, we see a bloodstained Evans walking into a police station, where he is questioned about the events of the previous evening.

As a flashback to a lavish party plays, Solemani's character is heard saying: "Just terrible people doing terrible things." A gunshot is then heard, before the release window is teased with the message: "Unmissable this Autumn."

What to Read Next

The logline for the psychological thriller teases details of the "unbreakable bond" between Martin and Ben, with the Fitzmaurice family giving Martin the "sense of belonging he has always craved".

"In turn, Martin remains unflinchingly loyal to Ben through even the greatest crises. Three decades on, Martin is invited to Ben’s lavish birthday party at the Fitzmaurices' country pile," it continues.

"The news of the Conservative leader's resignation threatens to derail Ben's party, as he considers announcing his intention to stand. Martin fears the publicity that Ben's bid would bring, dredging up the secrets of their past with tragic consequences…

"The drama moves between the shocking events of the party and the police investigation that follows, with flashbacks to Martin and Ben's lives at school, university and London party days."

Over on Amazon, Day's book has several glowing reviews, with the site describing it as "a gripping story of betrayal, privilege and hypocrisy, set in the unassailable heart of the British establishment".

The Observer said of the book: "A well-paced slow-burner of a literary thriller – think Donna Tartt’s The Secret History or Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of BeautyThe Party is a gripping page-turner."

The Party is coming to ITV and ITVX this Autumn.
