The Hack writer Jack Thorne has teased that we'll see a "completely different side" to David Tennant in his upcoming ITV drama with Toby Jones.

Based on real-life events, the seven-part miniseries is set to premiere in the autumn. The show tells the story of the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World tabloid newspaper.

Tennant leads the cast as investigative journalist Nick Davies alongside Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting), who plays DCS Dave Cook.

Joining them on the cast for the seven-part series are Toby Jones, who plays former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, as well as Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester and Katherine Kelly.

"Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real-life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World," reads the official synopsis.

"And running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle."

Speaking about The Hack, Thorne, who co-wrote the show with Sex Education's Annalisa Dinnella, told viewers to expect a unique performance from Doctor Who star Tennant.

"The Hack is a completely different side to David Tennant, an aspect of him that you've never seen before," Thorne told Deadline. "It's [Robert] Carlyle doing something very different, too.

"It's about the phone hacking scandal, but it's the phone hacking scandal from the inside of it, it's two sides of the same coin that then reveal the truth of what was going on during that time."

On the difficulties he faced when working on the upcoming show, Thorne said he enlisted the help of some "incredible researchers" after encountering what he described as a "legal minefield".

"It was a very, very difficult show to write," he continued. "We were working with the Mr Bates vs The Post Office lot, who are incredible researchers. Getting every detail right, and walking the legal minefield of the hacking scandal, was very complicated."
