Doctor Who star Mandip Gill will be part of another unlikely duo in upcoming series Cooper and Fry, in which she's set to star opposite a Downton Abbey actor.

Known for playing fan-favourite companion Yaz Khan to Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth, Gill has been cast in 5's new crime drama, an adaptation of the series of novels by Stephen Booth.

Cooper and Fry sees Gill and Downton Abbey's Robert James-Collier as the titular mismatched detectives.

Set in the Peak District, the series follows affable local cop Ben Cooper (James-Collier) and guarded newcomer Diane Fry (Gill) as they team up to solve a streak of mysterious deaths in the area.

"As their personal lives begin to intertwine, a unique friendship begins to form... But it won't always be easy," the synopsis teases.

Cooper and Fry doesn't have a release date yet. The series is part of 5's slate of upcoming dramas for 2025 and beyond, including brand new series and returning shows like crime drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries, which has just announced a Christmas special.

Cooper and Fry will air on 5.
