ITV's "excellent" medical drama Malpractice is returning for a second season, with the first trailer teasing the terror and manipulation to come.

The first season, from Line of Duty and Bodyguard creators World Productions, followed Dr Lucinda Edwards (Niamh Algar), forced into a medical investigation due to the death of opioid overdose victim, Edith Owusu, on her shift.

The second season of the acclaimed thriller will follow a new investigation, focusing on on-call psychiatric registrar Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes), caught between a new mother's postnatal check-up and the sectioning of another patient.

Dr Norma Callahan (Helen Behan) and Dr George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé) of the Medical Investigation Unit are called in to investigate, but there is more to this case than meets the eye.

A synopsis for Malpractice season 2 says: "His personal life is messy, and his colleagues may find him arrogant, but Dr Ford appears committed to his vulnerable patients.

"As the team dig further into the events of that night, what appears to be a series of poor choices by one doctor spreads beyond the psychiatric unit to a hospital seemingly at war with itself.

"With the MIU investigation closing in, can Dr Ford save his already fragile career from a string of apparently damning mistakes? Is Dr Ford a doctor with a God complex, or a victim of the institution? And can the MIU uncover the truth of what happened, despite hostility from all sides?"

The cast is rounded out by Selin Hizli, Zoë Telford, Rick Warden, and Ace Bhatti, with the second series set to air on ITV and ITVX next month.

Season one of Malpractice received rave reviews, with The Telegraph dubbing the show "excellent" while The Times said it "feels like it has something new to say".

The show has previously been compared to Line of Duty, with Behan opening up about the similarities between the two.

"I suppose the danger with World Productions is it being compared to Line of Duty, the Mecca of World Productions productions," she told Radio Times and other press.

"But no, I didn't feel that at all. It felt very, very unique when I read it. I didn't think there was anything else like it. It's absolutely its own thing."

Malpractice will return on ITV1 and ITVX in May 2025.
