ITV's returning drama Malpractice has added a number of new cast members for its second season, including Blue Lights and Line of Duty stars, as filming begins.

The series, which premiered last year, was renewed for a second run of episodes in late 2023, and will see Dr Norma Callahan (Helen Behan) and Dr George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé) investigate a new cast of suspected medical negligence.

Joining the ensemble this time are Blue Lights' Hannah McClean and Line of Duty's Ace Bhatti, alongside Victoria's Tom Hughes – who will play the focus of this season, Dr James Ford.

Also on board are Mum's Selin Hizli, Sherlock's Zoë Telford, and Top Boy's Seraphina Beh.

The plot for season 2 follows psychiatric registrar Ford, who appears committed to his patients despite his life being a mess and his colleagues at his North Yorkshire hospital finding him arrogant.

What to Read Next

"When he finds himself torn between a new mother attending a routine postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a floridly psychotic woman during a busy on-call shift, no one could predict the terrible consequences," the synopsis adds.

"As George and Norma uncover a hospital seemingly at war with itself, to what lengths will James go to preserve his position? Is he a doctor with a God complex or the victim of wider problems?"

Creator Grace Ofori-Attah is back to write the new episodes, and said last year upon the show's renewal: “I can’t wait to delve into a new and exciting area of medicine, exploring the complex bonds and divisions within hospital teams that push our characters to their limits.”

Simon Heath, CEO of World Production, said: “Grace has delved even deeper into her personal history as a Consultant Psychiatrist to deliver both a brilliant thriller and timely look at a critical area of the NHS.

"Her great writing has once again attracted a stellar cast to join Helen and Jordan to tell this new story.”

Malpractice airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
