Call the Midwife season 14 finale spoilers follow.

Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has been teasing a beloved character's return in the upcoming season 14 finale this weekend.

The Dr Patrick Turner actor popped up on the This Morning sofa this week to talk about the final episode of the current run, and told Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley that viewers will be treated to the return of a familiar face.

"There are things that happen, which we're not telling you," he said, "but there are things that happen around, including apart from all of those things in the finale, the return of a much-loved character.

"One of the old sisters, Sister Hilda, played by the brilliant Fenella Woolgar, comes back into the series, so you will see her again.

"There's a sense of things being rounded up beautifully, but there's also, as you know with Call the Midwife, there's drama there too. There's heartache as well."

The Buccaneers actor Woolgar played Sister Hilda between 2018 and 2022, making her last appearance in that year's Christmas special. What could be bringing her back from the Mother House? Well, there is a wedding taking place...

There's been a few big announcements about Call the Midwife recently. Firstly, Megan Cusack will be exiting as Nancy Corrigan.

Secondly, creator Heidi Thomas has stated that the BBC stalwart might go on hiatus.

"I don't believe Call the Midwife will ever end," she said. "But I do think we might take a break at some point."

But she did tease the possibility of a spin-off or some other way of "expanding" the world of Call the Midwife.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
