A Call the Midwife fan favourite has announced her shock exit after four years on the BBC drama.

Nurse Nancy Corrigan actor Megan Cusack confirmed that she was leaving the show during an interview with Radio Times. Responding to her departure, she shared: "Sometimes, you've got to step out of your comfort zone to grow.

"I've learnt so much, but I'm at the start of my career and I need to take a leap of faith."

Cusack's announcement comes after much fan speculation about her future on the show following her character's season 14 episode one storyline, which saw the nurse pack up and leave Poplar with her new fiancé Roger and her daughter Colette.

Her absence on the show was explained by her new job at a countryside hospital that came with accommodation.

At the start of the season, Cusack commented on their whirlwind love story, which began during the two-part Christmas special, telling press: "It was lovely. I never thought that Nancy would have a romance. I just didn't think it would ever come about."

She later added: "[Roger] is a delightful, wonderful fella and he treats [Nancy] and Colette very nicely."

The actor opened up about what the show meant to her and how she felt about leaving.

"It's bittersweet, really," Cusack told Radio Times. "I've made lifelong friendships there and I get to take those with me."

"But when I think about not rocking up to set and seeing Tim, who's part of the grips team, with his guitar hanging out of his van and serenading people at half six in the morning… It really has been like a family."

Nurse Nancy's last appearance on Call the Midwife will be in the season finale, in which she returns to Poplar to get married.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
