The Secrets She Keeps came to its conclusion on BBC One tonight (July 21) in a thrilling climax – but not every mystery was solved.

The final episode of the Aussie thriller series saw Aggie (Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael) on the run after her abduction of baby Ben was exposed and she ended up hiding out in the stockroom at the supermarket where she used to work.

Ben's parents Meghan (Jessica De Gouw) and Jack (Michael Dorman), still reeling from the exposure of Jack's secret affair, blamed themselves for Ben's abduction, but there was a ray of hope when a desperate Aggie phoned her boyfriend Hayden (Michael Sheasby) and told him that she would meet Meghan alone to give Ben, who had also been suffering with illness, back to her.

However, Hayden tricked Meghan and the police by lying about where Aggie would be, before making his escape from a police car and running to Aggie to try to convince her to take some money and go on the run with the baby.

She refused and eventually came face to face with Meghan again, criticising her for being "ungrateful" for her apparently perfect life while Aggie was forced to give up her own child as a teenager and had not been able to have any more children.

Terrified Meghan, aware that Aggie had stolen babies before who had gone on to die, managed to get hold of her child to feed him and when the police arrived, Aggie appeared to shoot herself.

However, in a shocking twist, it was revealed at the end of the episode that Aggie had survived and been sent to prison, while Meghan managed to fake a DNA test to find out whether Ben belonged to her husband Jack or his friend Simon (Ryan Corr) by switching out the testing swab for her other son Lockie's.

There was some disappointment among viewers over the fact that the mystery of Ben's paternity, a story thread that has been running throughout the series, was left unresolved:

But despite some disappointments, there were many viewers who were gripped by the final episode, with some questioning whether there could be a second series on the way to tie up those loose ends, particularly as Aggie has survived:
