Neighbours star Christie Whelan Browne has confronted the online abuse she is receiving about her role.

The actress, whose character Scarlett Brady has spent the last few weeks manipulating Ned Willis after developing a dangerous obsession with him, shared a screenshot of one particularly nasty comment on Twitter.

It read: "If this ugly psycho couldn't get any uglier they put the freak with no kneck in a disgusting pink jumper even the sight of her makes me sick (sic)."

She responded: "I'm thrilled people love @neighbours so much and they're protective of Ned. But I'm quite shocked at the disrespect some of the fans have shown in their comments.

"Guys, I'm an actor. Guys, I am a person. If you tag me and call me ugly- it is not cool."

She then went on to joke: "Also, I happen to have an abnormally LONG neck (kneck) so #fakenews."

Christie's Neighbours colleague Ben Hall (who plays Scarlett's obsession Ned) also took time to address the social media hate.

He wrote in the comments section: "There's an abnormally large amount of hate that comes with this show, particularly for women and 'psycho' characters. It's been like that for a long time and it's hugely disappointing. I should have warned you about the comments."

People really need to start distinguishing reality from fictional TV, don't they?

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
