In terms of the British soaps, it feels like they're always pushing the boat on how dark and gritty they can become.
Aussie soaps Neighbours and Home and Away have always felt much tamer in comparison, thanks to stricter standards Down Under. Whether the lighter tone is a good thing will vary based on the viewer, but Neighbours has been able to take it to the next level with their recent PG rating.
One of the first major storylines explored with this extra freedom is Sonya Rebecchi's cancer storyline, which has been very hard-hitting to watch.

"We’ve been able to tackle things in a more detailed way. We don’t have to allude to things. We can say it like it is."
Speaking about the all-female episode to mark International Women's Day and Australian TV's first gay wedding, Woodburne added: "The role of the show has always been to try and reflect contemporary society albeit in a suburban environment.
