Stephanie Davis is returning to Hollyoaks, three years after being sacked.

The actress, who plays Sinead O'Connor in the Channel 4 soap, opened up on Good Morning Britain about turning her life around so she could come back.

Discussing her battle with alcohol, the 25-year-old said that she had to do a lot of work on herself to recover from her problems.

"In the end, I was going to die, it was really sad," she said in the frank chat. "I did try to kill myself and the amount I was drinking, I was either going to hit my head or my body couldn't take anymore.

"It just got to the point where I gave up the fight, I wanted to be me again. I wasn't me, I was an empty, lost soul. It was sad."

Talking about the moment she decided to get some professional help, she said: "I was sat on my stairs with my mum and my auntie one day and I just gave up, something switched in my head.

"I said, 'I need to go to rehab, I need to get help'. They cried. I was looking at them thinking, 'Why are you crying?' It was tears of happiness, they were made up. They said, 'We're going to get the old Stephanie back'.

"Then I went, and I went on my journey and it was really, really hard, don't get me wrong. I've had to do a lot of work on myself but I'm so thankful for it now."

Stephanie also said how her cast mates reacted to her coming back, after her contract was terminated with immediate effect in summer 2015 and she was written out without a proper exit.

"It was weird because it was like I never left," she explained. "It was like stepping out and stepping back in. Everyone treated me like I've never been away.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
