The following article contains discussion of themes including suicide that some readers may find upsetting.

Hollyoaks star Ross Adams has spoken to Digital Spy about Scott Drinkwell and Mitchell Deveraux's wedding storyline, admitting that he's "conflicted" over whether they should get their happy ending.

The couple became engaged earlier this year and upcoming episodes will see Mitchell's father Felix book them a beautiful wedding venue for a few days' time.

Since Mitchell's proposal, some fans have wondered whether the relationship is moving too quickly, while others are backing the pair for a happily-ever-after.

Speaking to Digital Spy about the viewer reaction, Ross explained: "The proposal came out of an argument, as they were having a bit of a bicker. Mitchell proposed and it did feel like it came off the back of that argument, which I do think is probably never the ideal time for a proposal!

"But Scott is so in love with Mitchell that he wants to believe this is going to be the real thing. They've had such a rocky road so far – it's not been an easy ride for them.

"I can see why some people felt it was quick, because it was. Scott probably knows that too but the romantic side of him is saying: 'It's fine, we're going to get married and it's going to be the best wedding ever. It'll be my happy-ever-after'. We'll have to wait and see if it is!"

On having a wedding storyline coming up, Ross continued: "I'm super excited. Just before lockdown, we were filming the block which is the lead-up to the wedding. We'll have to complete that when we go back to work.

"With Scott being Scott, he'll be an absolute bridezilla. Think Katie Price and pumpkin carriages! He'd want it to be a sequinned extravaganza. Scott has been dreaming about his wedding since he was tiny but he never, ever thought he would get there.

"I remember when I filmed the scenes where Scott attempted to take his own life, one of the things he dreamed of was having someone who loved him, having a husband and a rainbow family.

"That was what Scott wanted three years ago and it's exciting because those things are in reach."

Ross admitted that he's currently torn between wanting happiness for Scott and hoping to keep getting dramatic storylines.

He said: "I'm really conflicted, because one of the things I love about Scott is that he is quite a tragic character. As an audience, you always want him to have his happy ending. For that audience reward, it'd be nice to see him get that taste of happiness.

"But if he was happy, it wouldn't be as entertaining to watch. I would like to see Scott be happy for a period of time but it's more interesting when he's not, as that's when characters make surprising decisions and that's what interests me."

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm on E4.
