Hollyoaks star Gregory Finnegan has promised more drama for James Nightingale's relationship with his teenage son Romeo Quinn.

The pair have built up a strong connection this year, but their progress looks set to be tested in emotional scenes later in 2019.

Chatting exclusively to Digital Spy, Gregory explained that the shock death of James's on-off boyfriend Harry Thompson will spark a new family crisis for the Nightingales.

James is expected to continue on a downward spiral following Harry's mysterious disappearance – and things would unsurprisingly get a whole lot worse if he ever finds out about his sad demise.

Asked if there's more trouble ahead for James and Romeo, Gregory told us: "Yes, we're starting work on that now.

"Their relationship is going to be severely tested in the coming months as James tries to comprehend what's happened to Harry."

Asked whether there's any glimmer of hope that Harry could miraculously return, Gregory replied: "Anyone can come back from the dead. You never know – he's Tony's son so anything could happen."

Off-screen, Gregory was named Best Actor at the British Soap Awards last month – beating Coronation Street's Jack P Shepherd, Emmerdale's Jeff Hordley and EastEnders stars Danny Dyer and Zack Morris in the public vote.

Reflecting on his impressive victory, Gregory said: "It was a real big surprise. It was fantastic but it wasn't something I'd expected to happen. A mate had told me privately earlier that there was no chance I could win it, because Danny Dyer had turned up!

"I was genuinely really shocked and the reaction has been lovely. Lots of people got in touch who I haven't seen for a long time, so it's nice."

Gregory's on-screen family are now up for awards of their own. In the longlist for the Inside Soap Awards 2019, Niamh Blackshaw (Juliet Quinn) has been nominated for Best Newcomer. She and Lysette Anthony, who plays Marnie Nightingale, are also up for Best On-Screen Partnership.

Gregory said: "Vote for Lysette and vote for Niamh! What a brilliant combination. Their on-screen partnership has come out of left field a bit and I think it's surprised everyone how much fun it is. They're fantastic and I hope they take it home.

"It'd be Lysette's second time taking home the Partnership award and I think she deserves it. Niamh has been a breath of fresh air as well. She's just brilliant and Juliet is a great character. I think she is going to run and run in the show."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
