It's finally happened, Emmerdale's most evil villain is behind bars at last.

Yup, that's right.

Serial killer Lachlan White's crime spree officially caught up with him tonight (September 6) as the latest episode of Emmerdale ended with his arrest.

Clearly very busy over the length of this storyline, Lachlan (Thomas Atkinson) has killed his mum, grandad, best friend and probably his aunt as well (not counting the people he's nearly murdered along the way).

But finally, after a mad scramble through the woods as Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) ran for her life with a psychotic ex-boyfriend in pursuit, she managed to escape.

However, Belle finished the episode in a hospital bed after being hit by a car driven by Robert Sugden and Ross Barton.

After an intense stand-off with armed police, crazed Lachlan was led away in handcuffs, while Belle was rushed off for treatment.

So, sort of an escape then?

Typically, Lachlan had one last trick up his sleeve and told police he had vital information as to kidnapee Rebecca White's location.

But there's one condition…

In exchange for Rebecca, he wants Belle.

Does that mean Rebecca's not dead? Well, you'll just have to wait and see...

Obviously, fans are buzzing to find out, but they were still quite happy to see "evil" Lachlan finally get his comeuppance.

"Thank goodness Lachlan has been caught," wrote one contented viewer.

"Now please send him to a prison which isn't in the Dales and script him out!"

"So Lachlan's reign of terror has finally come to an end on @emmerdale.. he will definitely go down as #Emmerdale's biggest bad guy!" declared another.

"Lachlan finally caught!!! So glad. Thought they were going to drag it out until Christmas," wrote a third.

Viewers were also quick to heap praise on Thomas Atkinson for his deliciously nasty turn as killer Lachlan.

"Even though the storyline was incredibly annoying," began one viewer, "the actor who played Lachlan did a fantastic job portraying an unhinged, mentally unstable villain."

Another wrote: "Lachlan's evil serial killer smirk at the end!"

Whatever happens next, surely Emmerdale's scariest villain can't escape a long stay in prison?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
