Supergirl director Craig Gillespie has said he won't spoil the fate of beloved pup Krypto the Superdog in the upcoming DC film. The film sees Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, following her cameo in 2025's Superman.

Supergirl's first trailer landed in February and audiences immediately fell in love with the adorable baby Krypto, who also made his first appearance in Superman.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, while Gillespie wouldn't give away Krypto's fate, he did tease a "surprising" ending.

"I can't spoil that. I'm concerned," Gillespie said. "We'll have to find out.

"But I will tell you, the ending is surprising. You know, it's for the art. Whatever works for the art, you've got to stay true."

Before bringing Supergirl to the big screen Gillespie previously tackled two other female-led films, the Oscar-winning I, Tonya, starring Margot Robbie and Emma Stone's Cruella.

Speaking about what draws him to projects with female leads, Gillespie said: "I have a very strong influence from my wife.

"I've been married for 34 years, and I've had the good fortune to be given these scripts that have these incredibly complex human characters that are flawed and relatable and human.

The director added: "The other part of it, too, though, is they're often outsiders or they're misunderstood, and either trying to find their place in the world or rejecting their place in the world."

But after meeting Ruthye Marye Knoll, Kara finds herself place on a "murderous quest for revenge".

Supergirl is released in UK cinemas on 25 June, and in US cinemas on 26 June.
