Adam and Ryan Thomas have confirmed that their ITV game show, 99 to Beat, has been cancelled.

The series saw the siblings preside over the action as 100 contestants went head-to-head in various challenges, with the last person standing taking home a £25,000 cash prize and the honour of being a champion.

After airing its eight parts from March until May earlier this year, many fans had been eager to know if the game show would be returning, but the pair offered a disappointing update on their podcast At Home with the Thomas Bros, which they host alongside brother Scott.

"I was like, 'I can't believe we were even talking positively about a job that we've done because we're so self-critical.' But we were like, 'You know what, we did a really good job of that 99 to Beat!'

"And guess what? It's not coming back," said Ryan, who played Jason Grimshaw on Coronation Street, with Adam replying: "When I am positive about something, it gets cancelled. Honestly, I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

"Like I did [I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! spin-off] Extra Camp presenting, did one series of that, got cancelled. The next presenting job I did was with Ryan, 99 to Beat, and that's got cancelled," added the star, who portrayed Adam Barton on Emmerdale.

Scott, who has appeared on Love Island, quipped that the "otherwise amazing" game show was "missing" some "spark and charisma" as he amusingly talked himself up, while Ryan joked: "So in the future, I'm doing jobs by myself".

In a statement to Digital Spy, a spokesperson for ITV confirmed the axing, saying: "99 to Beat is one of the biggest entertainment launches this year across all channels and streaming platforms.

"It reached 12.5 million viewers and was streamed over 4 million times on ITVX. The Thomas Brothers are fantastic presenters, but unfortunately at this stage we will not be recommissioning.”

Based on the Belgian show of the same name, 99 to Beat was billed as an "extraordinary game" by ITV, with Adam and Ryan exclusively telling Digital Spy earlier this year that they had always wanted to work together.

"Me and my brother have always wanted to work together. We just thought it would be acting together, rather than presenting! We never saw this one coming," said Adam, who currently plays Donte Charles on Waterloo Road.

"We were over the moon – not only to work together, but also to be able to do something that was brand new. The fact that ITV were trusting us on such a big project like this, it was one of those 'pinch myself' moments for both of us."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
