Emmerdale airs life-changing scenes for Cain and Debbie Dingle next week as the truth about Joe Tate's death threatens to tear them apart forever.
After months of keeping quiet about Joe's real fate, Cain comes clean with his daughter in the hope that it'll provide the closure she desperately needs.
When Debbie (Charley Webb) confides in Cain about how much she still misses Joe and how she'll never get over him, the bad boy finally cracks and admits that he killed her missing fiancé.
Although Cain only tells Debbie part of the story, it doesn't take long for her to do some detective work of her own – discovering that Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) was involved too and that Moira has known the truth for weeks.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others at a recent Emmerdale press day, Jeff Hordley – who plays Cain – explained: "A series of events lead to Cain revealing the truth. He's at bursting point and it weighs heavy on him.
"It starts when Debbie goes to identify a body the police have found. It's not Joe, but it's a massive turning point and a catalyst for Cain having to tell her and not hold it in, even though Moira tells him not to.
What to Read Next
"One night Cain goes to the garage and Debbie's there. They start talking and he just can't hold it in. Debbie walks out of the garage.
"The next time we see Debbie with Cain is at Home Farm with Graham. She goes to tell Graham what she knows, but Graham calls Cain to say Debbie is there.
"Between the three of us, Debbie realises that Graham was part of all this and in cahoots with her dad. She now knows that Joe is actually dead – he didn't run off and leave her at the altar. It's too much and she breaks down at Home Farm. Charley was amazing in the scenes."
One thing that Debbie doesn't find out is that Graham was the one who finished off the job after Joe's finger twitched – something that even Cain himself doesn't know yet.
Asked how Cain explains the situation, Jeff replied: "Cain explains that he punched Joe once and wanted to hurt him for what he'd done to Debbie, but didn't want to kill him. His head hit a rock – Cain didn't even hit him that hard. He explains that it was a freak accident and Graham backs him up.
"For Debbie, it's more the betrayal. He's watched her being on edge, she looked to Cain for answers and he's lied to her for months. Then she realises Moira was in on it.
"I don't know what's going to happen now. To play the truth of this, there has to be a rift between Cain and Debbie. But can they ever come back from that?"
Emmerdale airs these scenes on Monday, January 14 at 7pm on ITV.
