EastEnders spoilers follow.
EastEnders aired worrying scenes for Jean Slater tonight (May 12) as her friends found her having a seizure in the market.
Jean has become a cause of concern for her family over the last few weeks, prompting Kush and Shirley to intervene. But why has Jean had a seizure and will she be alright? Let us explain...
Jean's story explained – what has been happening?
Jean's welfare has become a cause for concern over the last few weeks, as she continues to grieve for her partner Daniel Cook.
As Jean, who has bipolar disorder, began to behave increasingly erratically, Kush's fears were confirmed when he discovered she had stopped taking her medication.
Since then, Kush has taken extreme measures in a secret bid to help Jean and has been adding her tablets to her food and drink. Monday's scenes saw Kush and Shirley join forces in ensuring Jean was taking her medication, following a further worrying discovery from the police.
What to Read Next
Speaking about Jean's recent struggles, Gillian Wright – who plays her – said: "She thought she was coping with Daniel's death very very well and he would be proud of her.
"He would want her to be more feisty, be more Jean and so she's thinking, 'Right, I'm doing really well, I'm not weeping and wailing all over the place so I don't need to take the tablets'."
Why did Jean have a seizure?
Oblivious to what Shirley and Kush have been up to, Jean was feeling visibly unwell in the lead-up to her collapse tonight.
Although Kush and Shirley put this down to her medication not working, Jean's physical health continued to deteriorate throughout the episode and she eventually had a seizure in the market.
Fans will have to wait until next week to find out exactly what has caused this, but Kush and Shirley's actions are bound to have played a crucial role.
Given that they've been tampering with her dosage, this has likely had a severe impact on Jean – with the aftermath set to play out in Monday and Tuesday's episodes.
"She doesn't trust anyone and feels quite betrayed," Gillian said. "Jean has no idea what's wrong with her and it's very very frightening for her."
Could Kush and Shirley be in trouble?
Again, this one remains to be seen. But if Shirley and Kush have caused Jean to become seriously unwell, there is a chance they could be facing serious consequences.
Speaking about Kush's shock actions of late, actor Davood Ghadami explained: "Under normal circumstances Kush wouldn't ever act the way he does – but these aren't ordinary circumstances as things are pretty extraordinary in the Slater house at the moment.
"He hasn't got the support that he would like from everybody, Mo hasn't been very responsive when he airs his concerns either.
"He only saw things only getting worse, so felt like he had no choice but to take matters into his own hands as a unilateral attempt at trying to keep the family stable."
What happens next?
Spoilers for next week have revealed that Jean will be in safe hands as Tina and Shirley call an ambulance for her.
However, as Jean is rushed to hospital to undergo further tests, her nemesis Suki Panesar will become convinced that all is not as it seems.
Viewers will have to wait and see what Suki's suspicions mean and whether she knows the truth, but how will Jean react if she finds out what Shirley and Kush have done?
Next week's episodes will also see the fallout of Keegan's rebellious decision to share the video evidence online – despite Jack's warning – while Ben gets some bad news about his operation.
EastEnders is currently on a reduced schedule, airing on Monday and Tuesday nights on BBC One. It'll continue on Monday, May 18 at 8pm on BBC One.
