EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders' Ben Mitchell will be given devastating news as he prepares for his operation next week.

Ben's life was turned upside down when he suffered additional loss of hearing in the boat accident back in February.

Last night's episode saw Ben (Max Bowden) discover that his potentially life-changing operation was due to take place imminently, but there was never any guarantee that it was definitely going to work.

To make matters more complicated, Ben agreed to take on a dodgy job with his dad Phil – something which will leave him deeply distracted as he heads to hospital tonight (May 12).

With Ben keen to help Phil in any way he can, he infuriated his boyfriend Callum by digging for information on what the police might know.

Callum isn't the only one who is worried as Ben's mum Kathy addresses her concerns as well.

With it clear that Ben isn't feeling well at all, Kathy does her best to support her son until they are distracted by newcomer Frankie's public row with a doctor.

Frankie's exchange with the medic leaves Ben with further fears about his future and he becomes all the more determined to plough on with his operation regardless.

However, Ben is left gutted when the doctor refuses to proceed while he is this unwell.

As Ben reels from the news, his dad Phil is also alarmed to hear what's happened. But what will this mean for their plan?

EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday, May 18 at 8pm on BBC One.
