On EastEnders, a brutal attack on Phil Mitchell has left him fighting for his life in hospital, with his family left reeling.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Stacey Fowler was the culprit behind the explosive attack on Phil (Steve McFadden), leading to herself and Martin looking to make a getaway before the consequences of her actions catch up to her.

In Friday's (August 2) episode, Phil's wife Sharon (Letitia Dean), Louise and Ben were given the disturbing initial news that Phil had suffered a serious head injury. While stable, they were told that he requires surgery, much to Sharon's distress.

After demanding to see him before he went under the knife, Sharon pleaded: "Please Phil, come back to me, to us," holding his hand as he lay in a hospital bed.

Meanwhile, Ben pointed the blame at Keanu for Phil's attack, mentioning Keanu and Phil's disagreement mere hours before he was attacked.

"They had an argument a couple of hours ago. Next thing we know, dad's left for dead," Ben argued. "So what I wanted to know is what he'd been doing just before I saw him walking away from the Arches, just before I found my dad in that pit!"

Keanu was left to defend himself against these accusations, insisting that the row was down to his looking out for Phil.

Sharon pointed out Ben was the one who had a "right gripe" with him about the will, and Ben retaliated by saying that Keanu had more to gain from Phil dying than he did.

An operation on Phil's brain to reduce swelling was successful, but the doctor stressed – much to the Mitchell family's distress – that there's still no way of knowing if any long-term brain damage had been done.

"We have no idea what state he will be in when we bring him around," the doctor told them.

Fans have rallied and are hoping for the best for Phil's recovery, with one believing that Sharon's pregnancy plot could be enough for writers to bring him back in one piece.

Another fan insisted that he'll survive due to the fact that he's an "indestructible bulldozer". Only time will tell.
