Coronation Street fans are calling for the British Soap Awards to recognise Shayne Ward after his final performances as part of Aidan Connor's tragic suicide storyline.

Aidan will be found dead at his flat in Wednesday night's hour-long special, but Monday (May 7) was the last time he will be seen on screen.

And after receiving universal praise from fans and his fellow co-stars, some people – including Shayne's sister – have called on the British Soap Awards to reconsider Shayne for the Best Actor category on social media.

Shayne had been put up for the category in the first round but did not make it to the shortlist. At the time, nobody knew about his storyline.

"I think the rules need to be bent a little here," Shayne's sister Emma tweeted. "Shayne missed out on Best Actor due to timing and the sensitive storyline being withheld. He needs too recognised! Do the right thing."

"We've all seen how amazing from the heart @shayneTward completed Aidan's last scenes while also making people aware of a very serious issue which is, guys don't realise there are people out there to help," said a fan account.

"Let's try get @SoapAwards to reconsider Aidan's last scene for Best Actor."

Shayne's fiancée (and former Hollyoaks star) Sophie Austin retweeted both of the above posts, lending her support as well.

And there are more tweets with the same sentiment:

Corrie stars Jack P Shepherd (David Platt) and Connor McIntyre (Pat Phelan) ended up being nominated alongside Emmerdale's Ryan Hawley (Robert Sugden) and Michael Parr (Ross Barton) and Hollyoaks actor Theo Graham (Hunter McQueen).
