Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street favourite Debbie Webster is set to go to prison next week, as she takes the fall for the dramatic Corriedale crash in place of Carl, who doesn't know he's her son.

Although next week's scenes see Carl confess to Debbie that he was driving the car, she tells him the truth about his parentage, revealing that that's why she's pleading guilty. However, she also hopes that she escapes a prison sentence due to being an older woman with dementia.

Unfortunately for her, things don't go the way she intends, and she ends up getting locked up. And according to her actor Sue Devaney, Debbie is really going to struggle on the inside.

"Oh, she's scared. She's frightened. She's so frightened," the actor said. "She's never been anywhere like that. Everything's going to be stripped from her."

"Debbie's mask is going to be gone, isn't it? The dementia is taking every last bit from her, but also the prison is gonna be taking everything from her. And it's how she survives that," she continued.

As tough as the prison scenes will be for Debbie, Devaney is having a ball playing this more stripped-back version of her character. "It is fantastic," she said, explaining that the character is used to putting on "just a bit of mascara" to mask who she really is.

"It's interesting to play somebody that, the whole front, the makeup, the way that they look, the what they drive, who they marry, everything has to be on show. So when you strip all that back... It's interesting to play Debbie when it's all stripped back. Who is she?"

Going a bit deeper into Debbie's new look, Devaney explained that there's been a fair bit of thought put into it.

"So, I go into the dressing room, and there's not a lot of makeup," she said. "So, I just give myself some mascara, scruff my hair up a bit. I have a really cheap lipstick 'cause you can buy makeup in prison. But it's not the expensive Chanel that Debbie has. It's cheap.

"She'll have a little cheap lipstick and she'll have a little cheap bottle of perfume so I'll make sure that I don't put my perfume on when I'm in prison. And the nails are off. No nails."

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
