New Coronation Street cast member Melanie Hill has been given her first major taste of Weatherfield drama with some heated scenes out on location.

The actress was working in Manchester today with co-stars David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Alison King (Carla Connor) for scenes set at the home of her character Cathy Matthews.

When Roy and Carla both decide to pay a visit to Cathy's house in an upcoming episode, she becomes visibly distressed by their arrival.

Rather than letting the well-meaning pair inside, Cathy causes a scene by angrily shouting at them through her window and ordering them to leave.

While the reasons for Cathy's unwelcoming attitude won't be revealed until nearer the time, viewers know that she has faced a tough few months due to her husband passing away following a battle with cancer.

Cathy recently confided in Roy about her sad loss as they spent time together at the local allotments, paving the way for a firm friendship and possible relationship between them.

Speaking about Cathy's storyline, Hill recently commented: "She is basically just consumed with the loss of her husband. It has affected her in such a way that she is now very anxious and very nervous. He took care of everything in their lives, like looking after the bills and obviously the allotment. She has never had to take care of anything before and now she is on her own so she is struggling with that massively.

"She talks for England but she is very nervous. She trusts Roy because she doesn't have many friends. Also, there is more to her than meets the eye. In future episodes we find out that she is carrying this big secret which she doesn't want Roy to find out, so that is going to be very interesting but that is further down the line."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
