Update: Chris Cornell's unexpected death has been ruled a suicide, according to Michigan officials.
Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody told The AP that he couldn't say why the police were investigating it as such, but that there were "basic things observed at the scene".
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office later confirmed that, in its determination, Cornell died from suicide. His autopsy is ongoing.

The AP reports that he died on Wednesday night (May 17) in Detroit, according to his representative Brian Bumbery.
Cornell was also the lead singer of Audioslave and provided the theme song to Daniel Craig's first outing as 007, Casino Royale, with 'You Know My Name'.

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause," Bumbery said in a statement.
"They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."
Cornell had only tweeted last night that he was in Detroit for a Soundgarden gig at Fox Theatre.
His unexpected death has led to early tributes from the likes of Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro, Glee's Kevin McHale and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
With Soundgarden, Cornell won two Grammy awards for singles 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Spoonman', taken from their 1994 album Superunknown which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard chart.
The band reunited in 2010 and released their sixth album King Animal in 2012, and he spoke to BBC 6Music's Shaun Keaveny at length about the new record and his career during an in-depth interview that same year.
As well as music, Cornell was involved in charity work, starting the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation to support children facing challenges such as homelessness, poverty, abuse and neglect.
He is survived by his wife Vicky and their two children, Toni and Christopher Nicholas.
