Stephen Fry has deleted his Twitter account after getting caught up in controversy following last night's BAFTAs.

He came in for abuse after jokingly describing Best Costume Design winner Jenny Beavan - apparently a personal friend - as looking like a "bag lady".

Fry angrily defended his remarks, and posted a cheery photo of himself with Beavan at the after-party, but then clearly gave up on the whole business and stepped away.

The writer-actor-director-presenter has had a stormy relationship with the social network. He was an early adopter and prolific tweeter for years, but his celebrity made him a target for abuse on a regular basis, and this is at least the fourth time he has quit the service.

He left in 2009 after being accused of being a bore; took a break in 2014 while working somewhere from which he had been advised it was "safest not to tweet", and also went quiet for several months early last year as well.

Hopefully, this current resignation won't last either. In the meantime, Fry will be back on TV tonight in The Not So Secret Life of the Manic Depressive: 10 Years On on BBC One at 9pm, discussing mental health 10 years after his last award-winning programme about the subject.
