As if commissioning a billboard congratulations to mark Rihanna winning the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs last night (August 28) wasn't enough, Drake had another surprise up his sleeve when he was the one to hand over RiRi's trophy.

Because this was no ordinary prize-giving, no sir, as Drake only went and chose this moment to confess his love for Rihanna.

"What's most impressive is the person... she succeeds by being herself," Drake said. "Most of all, we love the woman who hasn't changed since day one."

"She's someone I've been in love with since I was 22 years old. She's one of my best friends in the world. All my adult life, I've looked up to her, even though she's younger than me.

"She's a living, breathing legend in our industry."

He then gave her a rather awkward kiss on the cheek before Rihanna accepted her award.

In her acceptance speech, Rihanna paid tribute to her friends, family, country and her fans, saying that the award was not just down to her success.

Rihanna also put on FOUR (!) medley performances over the course of the awards ceremony, including a number of her many hits, including 'We Found Love', 'Work' and 'Stay', with island and gangster themes included, just to remind us of all the success she has achieved.

'Work' was among the videos nominated at last night's awards, while Rihanna's collaboration with Calvin Harris, 'This Is What You Came For' took Best Male Video.

However, the big winner of the night was Beyonce, who took home eight gongs including Best Music Video for 'Formation'.
