An American Werewolf in London is a horror masterpiece, a perfect blend of scares and comedy with groundbreaking creature effects, as well as moving performances from David Naughton and Jenny Agutter.
And for some reason Max Landis, son of John Landis who made the original, has decided to write and direct a remake of the cult classic. Now, his dad has said he doesn't think it's a very good idea.
"I advised him not to do it. I think he's putting himself in a bad position," John Landis told Collider.
"My son is brilliant, he really is, and he wants to do it. So what am I going to say? No? I know it won't be as bad as An American Werewolf in Paris, which was shit. So, I don't know."
Not exactly a ringing endorsement from dad, there... although he did compliment his son's screenwriting skills, saying: "He's a great writer. He's been writing since he was 7."
John Landis is attached to the project as executive producer, but it doesn't sound like he's going to be hands-on.
What to Read Next
He told Collider that he hasn't seen Max's script and when they ask what his involvement is, he said: "I get money".
The project was originally announced last December, and since then there has been little development.
Newcomer Ralph Kot is currently listed as 'rumoured' on IMDb to play David Kessler (the main character in the original), but since Kot currently has one one other 'rumoured' credit for a movie that appears to be in pre-production, we'd take this with a pinch of salt.
The only other interesting titbit, though, is the brief plot description on IMDb, which reads: "As she travels through the UK with her boyfriend, Alex is bitten by a werewolf in this remake of the 1981 classic."
Alex was the name of Jenny Agutter's nurse in the original movie, so it sounds like this update may be gender reversed. We're not quite sure how this is going to work.
Will Kessler be the nurse that tends to Alex? Or will he be her boyfriend? Does that mean we won't get the dynamic that David has with the undead corpse of Jack – David's mate who is killed by the werewolf?
It all sounds very worrying – but time will tell...
