Spider-Man: Homecoming released its bombastic new trailer with Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man as his mentor.

But it looks like Tom Holland's Peter Parker could be leaving Marvel's Cinematic Universe pretty soon – even though it feels like he's just arrived.

The landmark deal between Disney, Marvel and Sony allowed Spider-Man to appear in Captain America: Civil War, and he's already signed on to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.

But with a huge number of potential Spider-Man sequels, along with two confirmed spin-offs, it looks our friendly neighbourhood hero could be leaving Marvel a lot sooner than we expected.

Amy Pascal, who is a producer at Sony, as well as on Spider-Man: Homecoming told Cosmic Book News: "One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often.

"In fact, it may never happen again, after we do the sequel."

However, she soon tried to backtrack on the comment, adding: "Because Sony and Disney and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU, and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film.

"And I think that was a very rare thing for three companies to do and a very brilliant thing for them to decide to do because there are only so many stories that you know you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would never been able to do in any other way."

She finished by saying: "So, it was a very selfless thing that was very smart on the part of all the companies."

Sony seems insistent on releasing spin-off Spidey films for its own Spider-Man cinematic universe – which were also hinted at as far back as the infamous Sony emails hack – and they probably won't be connected the to MCU.

It's seems like Sony might want to branch off and do their own thing in the future – oh, and make more money without Marvel and Disney in the process.

Spider-Man Homecoming is released on July 7.
