Chloë Grace Moretz has revealed that the upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid won't be a retelling of the Disney version but is rather much darker and closer to the original tale.

The 18-year-old Carrie star takes on the iconic title character in the film adapted from Hans Andersen's classic fairytale and a screenplay by Richard Curtis.

Director Sofia Coppola left the project citing creative differences, and has since been replaced by Electrick Children's Rebecca Thomas.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about we can expect from the film - other than the Little Mermaid being blonde rather than a redhead - Moretz disclosed: "I'm excited to depict a story that people haven't really seen beforeA lot of the other fairytales - we've seen them in live action, and created as a musical.

"I think it's going to be really different to see the Little Mermaid on screen [because] we're going to show the story that we really want to show - which is not the Disney one.

"It's the Hans Christian Andersen story. And it's going to be darker, and it's a little bit more interesting, and it's definitely more naturalistic."

On her role being more relatable, she added: "I want to show a character that young girls can look up to, and fall in love with and be proud of.

"And to see the side of the Little Mermaid that we already know - which is great - but also more modern, which it needed to be."

Moretz also stars in science fiction thriller The 5th Wave - out for cinematic release this week - as the courageous Cassie Sullivan who goes on the run to save her brother as an alien invasion threatens to destroy the world.
