Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi thriller, Disclosure Day, is one of the most-anticipated films of the year, thanks in part to its rumoured link to the filmmaker's classic work, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
While some people believe that the upcoming project is actually a stealth sequel to the 1977 blockbuster, the almost 50-year wait for a follow-up film isn't even the craziest conspiracy theory surrounding Spielberg's latest project.
That award would go to the idea that the legendary director, also known for Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark, is working with the US government to release real-life information about the existence of aliens to the general public.

Addressing the various rumours surrounding the film, screenwriter David Koepp told SFX Magazine that this particular theory was his "favourite", sharing (via GamesRadar): "I love that one!"
"They felt that this information needed to get out and they were soft-launching it in entertainment form so that we could handle it, because otherwise we'll all freak out. That's a well worked out internet conspiracy theory and I love it," he added.

Unfortunately for extra-terrestrial fans, Koepp cleared up any speculation regarding the film's link to real-life aliens, with the writer quipping that he was "never contacted by a member of the government on this".
It's not surprising that fans have been coming up with various theories - no matter how outlandish they may be - about Disclosure Day, given that we know very little about the narrative ahead of its release next month.

We do know that Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a meteorologist who has a bizarre incident at work. Following the strange event, she meets with cybersecurity expert Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor), who claims to possess evidence of alien life.
The pair are targeted by a government-backed organisation to keep the information quiet. But is it too late to put the proverbial genie back into the bottle? And could the future of the planet be at stake following their discoveries?
Disclosure Day is released in UK cinemas on 10 June.
