Wicked spoilers follow.

We've now been treated to the final trailer for Wicked: For Good and as well as making us feel all emotional over Elphaba and Glinda again ("think of what we could do together"), it also reveals a dark twist from the musical which might not be immediately obvious to anybody who hasn't seen it.

Wicked: For Good will adapt Act Two of the hit musical, which tells the events of The Wizard of Oz from a different perspective. During it, we'll meet classic characters Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, but we've actually already met them. Major spoilers for Wicked – and very likely spoilers for Wicked: For Good – ahead.

Towards the end of the final trailer, we see the Tin Man in distress and asking somebody off-screen, "What have you done to me?". Rather than being a brand-new character introduced in the sequel, there's a strong possibility this is Boq Woodsman, played by Ethan Slater.

We say 'strong possibility' because there is always the chance that the movie adaptation will change the events of Wicked. However, if it follows faithfully to the musical, then we'll see the events that lead Boq to turn into the Tin Man.

In the musical, Nessarose becomes the Governor of Munchkinland and removes the Munchkins' rights, meaning that Boq is forced to stay with her. But when Elphaba enchants Nessarose's shoes, allowing her to walk, Boq attempts to leave her to be with the person he truly loves, Glinda.

Nessarose doesn't take too kindly for this and tries to cast a love spell on Boq from the Grimmerie, which backfires due to her limited magical abilities and instead causes his heart to start shrinking. The only way that Elphaba can save Boq is by casting another spell which transforms him into the Tin Man, since it means he could live without a heart.

Boq blames Elphaba for turning him into the Tin Man, leading to him joining the literal witch hunt to find her. The "what have you done to me" in the trailer could be Boq blaming Elphaba, or even Nessarose, but it does suggest that it's him as the Tin Man as it fits with the musical storyline.

There could well be a surprise in store for Wicked fans as we know that Nessarose's storyline has been tweaked. The moment where Elphaba enchants Nessarose's slippers to enable her to walk has been changed to feel "less like a fixing moment", but whether this then impacts on Boq is unclear.

Away from the Tin Man, the trailer also teases Fiyero changing into the Scarecrow which, in the musical, is a result of Elphaba casting a spell to keep Fiyero safe from harm. The trailer has Elphaba looking at a distinctly Scarecrow-like figure wearing Fiyero's unmistakable green jacket.

One thing that might surprise you from the trailer is that we never see Dorothy's face, but it seems that might be the case in the movie. It was heavily rumoured that Alisha Weir was playing Dorothy, and that might still be the case even if we never see her.

Instead, we'll just see Dorothy from a distance or from behind, as in the trailer. "I think that's such a wonderful thing to do," said Cynthia Erivo. "Because then everyone gets to keep the Dorothy that they know."

Wicked: For Good is released in cinemas on 21 November.
