UK horror fans will finally get to experience Together this week, a must-see body horror that sees real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco playing a couple going through some messed-up events.

The gory horror debuted with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and still holds a strong 90% rating, following its US release. There are unforgettable sequences in Together, with Brie and Franco delivering fully committed performances.

But as wild and dark as Together gets, it actually had a benefit to their relationship off-screen.

"People have asked about when we're fighting in scenes together, do you take any of that home, is it weird to be around each other?," Franco told Digital Spy ahead of the movie's UK release on Friday.

"The truth is these characters are so different to us, the relationship is so different than ours that, more than anything, at the end of the day we were just thankful for how healthy our relationship is in comparison."

As well as starring together in, err, Together, the duo also produced the horror movie, which is written and directed by first-time filmmaker Michael Shanks.

It's far from the first time they've shared the screen, but that shared experience and history meant that it arrived at the "perfect time" according to Brie.

"We've developed such a shorthand together on set. When I think of those earlier jobs – Disaster Artist was the first one, Little Hours was the second – it was like getting our feet wet," she reflected.

"[It was] being like, 'How are we both on set, are you going to be a method actor that's scary to be around?' – and he wasn't. I feel like it would have been scary to dive right into something like Together that's so intense."

Franco added: "Five or so years ago, we were experiencing these things behind the camera for the first time, whether that's writing, directing or producing. We were learning how to do it and we've been getting better at it since then.

"With this one, we have a first-time writer/director in Michael Shanks who is incredible, but it was amazing for us to be there for him in the sense of protecting him, keep him away from all the logistical bullshit that he didn't need to worry about, so he could focus on the creative side."

Together is released in UK cinemas on 15 August.
