A cult classic '90s film has been transformed into a stage show - and it's making its debut this autumn.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, which starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in the titular roles, follows the duo trying to make something of their lives in time for their 10-year school reunion.

A musical adaptation of the film is in the works from the movie's producer, Barry Kemp, and screenwriter Robin Schiff, debuting off-Broadway in New York City on 28 October.

Ahead of its opening at Stage 42, an official synopsis gives fans a taste of what to expect: "For most of us, the idea of reliving high school is nothing short of a nightmare. That’s why if we ever do return, even for just one night, it has to be in style.

"When Romy and Michele are invited to their 10-year reunion, they hatch an outrageous scheme to reinvent themselves and impress their former classmates. With an ’80s and ’90s pop-inspired score, Romy and Michele: The Musical is an absolute feel-good joyride."

Speaking ahead of the musical's debut, Kemp and fellow executive producer Stephen Soucy said Romy and Michele remain "icons of friendship, fashion, and individuality from the moment we first met them".

They continued (per People): "Bringing their story to the New York Stage is the perfect home for their bold and quirky spirit to be reborn. We can’t wait for audiences to enjoy this hilarious and heart-filled new musical."

The production follows the news that a sequel to the beloved film is in development.

Confirming she and Kudrow are set to reprise their roles, Sorvino said: "Almost every single character from the original that was important is coming back. This is all pending, them making deals, them saying yes, but they're all in there."

The original film holds a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as "fun and feel-good" with "special charms".

The characters from the film are taken from the stage play Ladies Room, which also starred Kudrow.
