Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is finally getting a sequel.

A follow-up to the cult '90s classic, starring Friends' Lisa Kudrow and Hollywood's Mira Sorvino, has been discussed for ages, but now it's actually happening.

Deadline has reported that the duo are in final talks to star and executive produce, with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' Tim Federle on board to direct, and an expected June production start in Los Angeles.

The storyline for the sequel hasn't been revealed yet, but both the screenwriter Robin Schiff and producer Laurence Mark are back in the same roles as before.

Sorvino shared a screenshot of an article about the sequel to her Instagram page, and wrote in the caption: "We're pretty excited about it."

Kudrow and Sorvino unofficially reprised their roles at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2022, appearing on stage in outfits inspired by the film and sporting a load of Post-Its.

Speaking previously about the long-standing success of the film, Sorvino said: "There's something about Romy and Michele that's very enduring. I think it's the nerd friendship, rising above and silliness of it all because we're really stupid. We think we're smart, but we're really dumb and yet we love each other.

"We go through all these dumb things because of our wish to impress other people and then we realise that, you know, we're enough in our love for each other and our crazy style is enough."

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion can be streamed on Disney+. The sequel does not currently have a release window.
