Taron Egerton has addressed the possibility of a sequel to his new Netflix thriller Carry-On.

The Kingsman actor stars in the film as TSA agent Ethan Kopek, who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveller to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight.

Following its release on December 13, Carry-On landed the biggest opening for a Netflix movie this year, earning a place in the top 10 of 93 countries and topping the English film list with 42 million views.

During a recent appearance on US talk show Today, Egerton said he would "be open" to returning for a sequel if the storyline was right.

"It's kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel," he explained. "But yeah, why not."

The actor added that sequels "work for Die Hard, so who knows?".

He also praised his Carry-On co-star Sofia Carson, saying he "really loved working [with] such a lovely person and brilliant actress".

"If there ever was a sequel... it'd be interesting to see what she's up to," he added.

Carry-On also stars Jason Bateman, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Logan Marshall-Green, Sinqua Walls and Dean Norris.

Elsewhere, Egerton recently landed a role opposite Charlize Theron in upcoming Netflix thriller Apex.

The actor is set to play a psychopath who stalks Theron's adrenaline junkie rock climber during her dangerous expedition in the wild. Baltasar Kormákur is directing the film from a script written by Jeremy Robbins, though further details are being kept under wraps for the time being.
