Downton Abbey 3 has finally landed an official release date.
Universal Pictures UK confirmed on Instagram on Wednesday (June 26) that the third Downton Abbey film will arrive in cinemas on September 12, 2025 — the same day as its US debut.
The latest spinoff of the acclaimed TV series — which is available to watch on top streaming service ITVX — has been written by series creator Julian Fellowes and will be directed by Downton Abbey: A New Era's Simon Curtis.
No storyline details have been released yet, but fans can expect to see Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern returning as Robert and Cora Crawley.

Other familiar faces coming back from the TV show include Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Talbot), Jim Carter (Mr Carson), Phyllis Logan (Elsie Carson), and Dame Penelope Wilton (Lady Merton).

It's also been confirmed that two-time Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti will be reprising his Downton Abbey role as Cora's brother Harold Levinson, alongside newcomers to the franchise Joely Richardson and Alessandro Nivola.

Earlier this week, Hugh Bonneville dropped some hints about what fans can expect from Downton Abbey 3 by promising it's the “best iteration of the film versions yet".

“For my character, I think the usual [can be expected], which is that he's a sort of dinosaur trying to be led into the future reluctantly, and then eventually he stumbles forward a bit,” the actor told Yahoo! Entertainment. “So as always, there's that rhythm of things changing with glacial slowness.
“Robert [is] finally accepting that things [are changing] — it's time to move the story on, so to speak. It's got the usual tropes, if you like, of thrills and spills in a very Downton way, which means spilling a teacup pretty much!"
Downton Abbey 3 is set for release in the UK and US on September 12, 2025. The TV series can be streamed on ITVX.
