It might be seven weeks since Barbenheimer Day, but Barbie and Oppenheimer are continuing to set box office records.
As expected, Barbie has officially toppled The Super Mario Bros Movie as the highest-grossing movie of 2023, while Oppenheimer has crossed the $850 million mark as it eyes an unlikely $1 billion result.

Barbie box office
As of September 3, Barbie has taken a record-breaking $609.5 million at the US box office and $771.5 million overseas, resulting in a massive global haul of $1.38 billion to date.
It was already Warner Bros's biggest movie ever and, as mentioned above, it has now become the highest-grossing movie of the year to date. Overall, it's the 15th biggest movie of all time globally.
The incredible run has also seen Greta Gerwig deliver the biggest movie ever in the US by a female director, and it's only a matter of time before Barbie overtakes Frozen II's $1.45 billion to become the biggest movie ever worldwide by a female director, solo or in a pair.
Oppenheimer box office
As of September 2, Oppenheimer has grossed $310.3 million at the US box office and $542.7 million overseas, resulting in a terrific global haul of $853 million.
Oppenheimer has now become Christopher Nolan's third biggest movie of all time, surpassing Inception's $837.2 million result. It's now only behind The Dark Knight ($1.01 billion) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion).
Following an impressive chart-topping $30.3 million debut in China this weekend, you can't yet rule out Oppenheimer reaching $1 billion. It's far from guaranteed, but it's certainly a possibility.
The movie has the unique honour of being the highest-grossing movie to never hit top spot at the US box office, and it's also seventh-biggest R-rated movie of all time domestically.
In terms of biopics, Oppenheimer ranks only behind Bohemian Rhapsody ($910.8 million) at the global box office.
