Margot Robbie has said she doesn't know why people "hated" her 2022 box office flop Babylon.

Also starring Brad Pitt and Diego Calva, Damien Chazelle's Babylon chronicles the rise and fall of various characters in the 1920s during Hollywood's transition from silent films to sound.

Barbie star Robbie appears as Nellie LaRoy, a big-screen actor who captures the attention of Mexican migrant Manuel 'Manny' Torres (Calva) who meets her at a debauched Hollywood party.

As Nellie becomes an 'it girl' after taking a role from starlet Jane Thornton (Phoebe Tonkin), Manny befriends troubled film star Jack Conrad (Pitt) while climbing the ranks of the studio system.

Despite its star-studded cast and glitzy premise, the film grossed $63 million against a production budget of $78 to 80 million.

It received five Golden Globe nominations and three Oscar nominations, but polarised critics and fans alike.

Speaking on the Talking Pictures podcast, Robbie said she can't understand why Babylon bombed so hard.

"I love it. I don’t get it either. I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it," she said.

"I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, 'Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?' Like when you hear that Shawshank Redemption was a failure at the time and you’re like, 'How is that possible?'"

The Wolf of Wall Street star spoke positively about working on the film, especially with La La Land Oscar winner Chazelle.

She continued: "Damien is so thorough. Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.

"When we were trying to figure out what the accent should be for that character, I gave him 51 different versions of an accent. It was like doing a one-woman show.

"We started off with like Boston. Nellie is from Boston. Here’s what she sounds like if she’s from Arkansas.

"Then I got specific. Here is Nellie if she was a mixture of Snooki from Jersey Shore and Joe Pesci. Now I’m going to be a little bit of Fran Drescher mixed with Snooki. This is how specific we got. At one point, I counted all the voice things I offered him at that point and it was 51."

Following Babylon, Robbie co-produced and starred in Greta Gerwig's record-breaking Barbie.

She will next appear in Kogonada's romantic comedy A Big Bold Beautiful Journey alongside Colin Farrell, which is set to be released in 2025.
