I Am Legend 2 is happeningseeing the return of original movie star Will Smith and introducing Marvel star Michael B Jordan to the dystopian franchise.

The leading duo will also produce the horror/sci-fi sequel, according to Deadline, and scriptwriter for the 2007 original Akiva Goldsman, who adapted Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name, will write the sequel's screenplay.

While The Hunger Games' Francis Lawrence directed the first movie, it is yet to be announced who will be at the helm of the sequel.

Confirming the news on Instagram, Smith shared a picture of a post-apocalyptic scene from the original movie.

The first movie, which grossed nearly $590 million worldwide, saw Smith play Robert Neville – a New York scientist and the last human in survivor of a plague that transforms humans into cannibalistic mutants called Darkseekers.

In an effort to reverse the effects of the human-made virus, originally created to cure cancer, Dr Neville uses his own immune blood in a desperate bid for a cure but soon learns he is drastically outnumbered by the albino mutants.

News of the sequel comes after Smith's recent Oscar nomination for Best Actor in drama-sport biopic King Richard. The film also received nods for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Original Song.

Jordan is best known for starring in Marvel's Black Panther and the Creed franchise, and earlier this year addressed the possibility of returning to the MCU as villain Erik Killmonger.

"It's a character in a world that I love so much," he told MTV UK.

"Who knows?" he added, before suggesting: "As we all know, Marvel has their plans and their things and, you know, how things are gonna shake out."

A release date for I Am Legend 2 is to be announced.
