Netflix's next Zack Snyder project Rebel Moon has found its lead in Sofia Boutella.

Recognised for her roles in The Mummy, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Nicolas Cage's crazy caper Prisoners of the Ghostland, the Algerian actress will portray a mysterious young woman dispatched from her endangered home planet to gather warriors.

The reason why? Tyrannical Regent Balisarius threatens to destroy her colony's peaceful existence.

Co-writer and director Snyder previously said of Rebel Moon: "This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."

Cameras are expected to roll next year sometime, with the Watchmen filmmaker further revealing: "I've been working on this on the side for so long, it's pretty far along."

Back in May, Snyder debuted for the streaming platform with Las Vegas zombie romp Army of the Dead, which Digital Spy awarded three stars in our review.

"You don't mind a runtime of almost two-and-a-half hours when Dave Bautista is gunning down a sea of zombies," we said.

"However, you do definitely notice it when Army of the Dead takes almost an hour to get into Vegas and whenever it slows down for the needless subplot of the quarantine camp outside the city. It's gained some unexpected timeliness after the pandemic, but is otherwise just used for some on-the-nose political points.

"An overstuffed runtime is not the only familiar Snyder flaw to crop up either as the movie doesn't always strike the right tone, failing to balance the lighter heist elements with darker genre beats."
