Mike Flanagan has revealed that he considered ending The Haunting of Hill House on a cliffhanger – which, we can all agree, would've been infuriating.
The Hill House creator told TVLine: "It didn't look like anything I'd want out there in the world, which is why we abandoned it quickly.
"It was part of the very, very early conversations we had about it, but it never really took a shape that I'd want to talk about."

Other than that change, however, Flanagan's show mostly echoes the original script.
"Whatever other ideas we entertained, the ending we shot is actually very much in keeping with how it was first conceived and presented," he explained.

"I think the other ideas were just detours, but they all led back to the same place."
Earlier this month, Flanagan suggested that the show, based on the 1959 psychological gothic novel by Shirley Jackson, could continue as an anthology series, telling The Wrap that a second season wouldn't involve the Crain family.
"If we did do a season two, it definitely wouldn't involve the Crains," he said. "I think their story is told. An anthology series, about Hill House or something entirely new, could be really interesting!"
Meanwhile, the cast of The Haunting of Hill House have revealed that there are a few sneaky Easter eggs in the season finale that hint at the show returning.
The Haunting of Hill House is streaming now exclusively on Netflix.
