Everyone's favourite chain-smoking demon hunter is reborn in the first look at The CW's animated revival of Constantine.

The cult classic DC Comics live-action series isn't getting the full-on reboot that fans have been hoping for, but Matt Ryan will reprise the title role in a brand CW Seed Constantine digital series.

A poster featuring the cartoon rendering of the Hellblazer was unveiled at New York Comic-Con on Friday (October 6), along with the first full synopsis for the upcoming season.

That synopsis reads: "Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, he fights the good fight. With his soul already damned to hell, he'll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent.

"With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there's hope for him and his soul after all."

Much like CW Seed's other animated shows Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray, the new Constantine is being overseen by the team behind the live-action ArrowVerse.

Also working on the project are Batman: The Brave and the Bold writer J.M. DeMatteis and David S. Goyer, who co-wrote the live-action Constantine for NBC in the US.

Don't give up hope of seeing Matt Ryan back in Constantine's trench coat in live-action either. Legends of Tomorrow showrunner Phil Klemmer recently expressed hopes of the demon hunter appearing on his show this year.

"This is a much more supernatural, spooky vibe this season," he revealed at the TCA press tour. "We're dealing more with magic. It's less real-world bad guys."

Constantine will be premiering on the CW Seed app in the US at some point in 2018, with an exact premiere date expected to be confirmed before long.
